Spring Bass Fishing Recap

Spring Bass Fishing Recap
June 2018, Carl Garrard

As we transition to summer, I'm looking back on the spring  bass fishing season this year with many happy thoughts. This year was about Brian and I getting back into bass fishing, even more so than when we were in our teens and early 20's. Neither of us initially had many expectations this year other than to just get back out there and enjoy bass fishing again.  During the course of the spring we found that not only has our love for bass fishing not faded any, but that our appreciation for bass fishing has become even greater than either of us could have ever expected. Now that we both are in our 40's, we've lived through important phases of our lives, established ourselves in the world, and have been raising our children. And the time has come for doing something for ourselves again.

Now that all of the stars have aligned for us, we realize that this great sport has a potential to be at higher level that we could have ever dreamed of as children. Life experience has taught us to have an even greater appreciation for what this sport has to offer- on so many more levels than we could have imagined. Bass fishing truly is a pleasure and a challenge on multiple levels. And this spring has reminded us of just that. We've both been learning so much more about the sport of bass fishing this year. Yet along with that, I know that I feel truly grateful. Already this year I've rekindled and added new relationships and have made priceless life long memories with my daughter. And if that weren't enough, I get to look forward to all of the new experiences for years to come.

One of many upcoming goals for next year, a new boat. We need a platform to expand our fishing adventures.

Brian and I also have big dreams again, yet this time our dreams are tempered and nurtured with years of experience and wisdom to help see those dreams become goals. Of course, it also helps that we are in a better financial position to support this sport, of which is a big piece of the puzzle that we lacked when we were younger. What we initially aimed to achieve this year was a simple formula:  to knock the rust off of our past years of latency, soak up tons of new knowledge about fishing and the industry, and get out and fish as much as possible. In a short period of time we've definitely met those goals, and we've also made some bigger goals too that we will share soon. In retrospect, I constantly  feel like I owe a deep debt of gratitude to the sport, to our wonderful free country, and to the people I love and care about that have supported us and cheered us on.

Both of us have learned so much more about bass fishing this year.  Personally speaking, not only have I  become an even better angler than when I was as a kid, but I've been reminded that this sport can help bring a more balanced and quality life. No matter how long you've been fishing, there is so much more to learn and experience in this sport. There are so many aspects to becoming a better bass angler that you never run out of that feeling of being challenged, and to be cliche, it's quite addicting! Below is just one example of a confidence boosting personal success story that I've experienced this spring.

Great success! After being skunked on several frustrating post-workday evening trips to Laguna Niguel lake, I finally figured out the late afternoon/evening feeding pattern and caught this nice 2+ pound largemouth (who absolutely crushed my topwater bait). I attribute this success to learning new ways to identify bass behavior patterns this year, and most of all by staying patient and observing details. Bass are now in the post spawn and pre summer mode here, and they are staging on a drop off near a creek channel that parallels the shoreline, but are coming up in bursts through the weedline to eat baitfish on shore such as baby bass and bluegill all day long. The key to finding the right spot, was to identify where the baitfish were concentrated, aided by watching where the birds of prey were feeding (such as heron's/egrets etc.). After I learned what they were up too, I caught two nice bass that night. The moral of the story here is to keep at it, keep learning, and be patient. You will succeed!

We've both had good success this year bass fishing so far. Although neither of us have caught bass over the elusive 5lb mark yet, I do think we stand a good chance too this year at some point. We've been able to figure out patterns and try new techniques, and even apply new knowledge from our mental tacklebox while on the water to adjust to changing circumstances. So far we've had success on four different bodies of water, and will expand the amount of water we cover going into summer and fall. I'm proud of what we've achieved so far this year, and look forward to building on what we've learned already and sharing that with you.

I want to end this short article by reminding you that our website aims to serve anglers all over the world. We know that there are a myriad of websites and YouTube channels on the internet. But our goal is a little different but very simple here; to share with you our experiences with our friends and family,  our acquired knowledge and techniques, and articles on fishing gear we recommend and use. We hope that our site will help serve to motivate you to get out there and fish, to relate to our experiences, and boost your confidence as well as overall knowledge of the sport. Please do not hesitate to tell us what you want to read about, this is your website too!

I'd also like to announce our new found relationship with www.SoProGear.com. They are an old school service first company that I truly recommend for sporting goods of all kinds.
